Langkawi and the paradise island of Koh Lipe

English version below ↓. Langkawi.

  1. Lake of the Pregnant Maiden
  2. Eagle feeding point
  3. Pulau Beras Basah

Only for one day???”

Langkawi. Tax free paradise of Malaysia. A place you can actually spend more than the four days I did (including Koh Lipe). I didn’t make use of any of my days off, so a long weekend was the best thing to do here. My favorite personal travel agent Eelune gave me the tip to definitely not skip Koh Lipe when I was going to Langkawi. And just as easy as that, the flight was at Thursday evening.

The most popular beach is Pantai Cenang and is located at the west coast of the island. Our hotel Easy Crystal was located just across the main street parallel to the beach, which made it really convenient for us only needing to cross the street from the hotel to the beach to enjoy the vibrant beach nightlife. The first bar we’ve encountered, we were greeted “Captain Bobo”, a guy looking like a pirate serving his guests. It almost looked like an act. After a few drinks and some fire shows (something which is quite common on beaches here) we resorted back to the hotel.

Island hopping is a popular activity to do, starting from mostly the main beaches. They are tours which bring you to the highlights around the area boat in a fun and effective way. The island hopping tour can be done via AB Tours, an agency located around the middle of the main road. It brings you to the following locations:

  1. Lake of the Pregnant Maiden
  2. Eagle feeding point
  3. Pulau Beras Basah

The next day we rented a motorcycle to explore the island. The price was RM135, so roughly 35 euro’s. Fuel is very cheap, so that’s not an issue. We drove up to the Cable Cars. Lines were long and it wasn’t really cheap. Plus if you wanted to get the Express lane, prices were doubled. We decided to skip this and continue up to the far north to go to a private beach at a resort, the beach called Tanjun Rhu Beach. After passing a security guard, we parked the motorcycle at the beach and went for a swim. Drove back to hand in the motorcycle in the late afternoon and got our tickets to Koh Lipe. Be sure to get it including longboat transportation from the ferry, as there is no dock at Koh Lipe itself. Round trip costs us RM118 and you can get it from the stalls at the main road as well. Thereafter drinks at Little Lyla where an artist was playing which we’ve met before. He invited us to “The Woods”, where Saskia performed together with Andy at a party after a wedding. The places you’ll get when you’re a traveling artist…

Because we were going to spend one night at Koh Lipe, we could spend two days there. So early morning (after a very short night) we went to the jetty (harbor). Closed my eyes for a bit during the transfer, but I was surprised the the clarity of the water when we arrived. It really is “crystal clear”, the clearest I’ve seen until now. Amazing. We did island hopping here as well, which brought us to the next locations:

  1. Snorkeling
  2. Smooth Rock Island
  3. Snorkeling
  4. Barbecue on a remote island with sunset
  5. Snorkeling with lightning algae

The hopping took from 1pm until 8pm, but it felt like it was lasting forever. The relaxing way of traveling, the chilling while barbecuing and the time allocated at each snorkeling spot was more than enough to not rush anything. Plus the fact that I swum with ba sharks. Although they are still small, they already look at you angry. Really cool. After coming back, we went to Adang Sea Divers & Lodge, an eco lodge located near Sunrise Beach. You could only pay with Paypal beforehand.

Because the beach was called Sunrise Beach, we couldn’t miss the sunrise being so close to the beach. We set our alarm clock at 5.30am and watched the sun rise for an hour. After that back to bed. Woke up the alarm clock again at 10am, so we were able to check out at 11am. Of course we had breakfast at Sunrise Restaurant before we started out way back to KL. Walked back to Thai immigration, took the boat back to Langkawi, taxi van to the airport, flew back to KL International Airport, the bus to KL Sentral and then the taxi home. A lot of effort for Koh Lipe and in fact it was actually too short for only one night. Which I could conclude from the reaction of the guy at the desk of the lodge: “Alex Maat… Only for one day???”
