The historical town of Melaka

English version below ↓.

ENGLISH VERSION

What would a stay in Malaysia be without a trip to the historical town of Melaka? Fortunately, the bus went at a reasonable time in the morning, so this time I had enough time to properly wake up before I had to leave for the bus stop. I would meet with two different groups of people whom I have met on a Couchsurfing event that Friday, but no one showed up on time. We decided to meet later in Melaka when we’d all arrive.

This historical town is known for its elements of the time still remaining from the Dutch Colonies. Thats why you’ll see street names such as Heeren Street (a typical Dutch street name). One of the people with whom I was there was a local, so he was able to show us around. We started walking Jonker Street, which is the main street in Melaka. When he knew some kind of caramel candy and a special type of ice cream, everybody would be happy to try. After some stops for these goodies, we went to the A Famosa Fortress from 1511 and up a hill for a view from a higher point in the fort. Walking from there, along the river, we went looking for the Baboon House. This is a special restaurant where they added a maximum amount of people in and a gate at the front door. This must be something very special, because taking photographs inside was strictly prohibited. And indeed, the interior was full of fun stuff and artsy wall paintings.

After a juicy burger, we continued to the Geographer cafe, where we sat down for a beer and watched the Jonker Street become the famous night market. They removed all the cars and 20 minutes later the majority of the stalls were apparent. We walked the night market and wanted to take some pictures in the dusk, but it started to rain slightly. We looked for shelter, went for a quick cup of coffee and took a taxi back to the bus. With this interesting architecture and colorful environment, it is easy to spend one day in Melaka.
